Training for Something Bigger Than a PB or Getting Fitter

Training for Something Bigger Than a PB or Getting Fitter cover

The modern gym floor is often driven by numbers. Whether it is adding another 5kg to a deadlift, shaving ten seconds off a 5K run, or dropping a dress size, these tangible metrics are fantastic ways to track progress. Hitting a Personal Best (PB) provides a rush of dopamine and tangible proof of your hard work.

However, relying solely on numbers and aesthetics is a fragile strategy for lifelong fitness. Progress is rarely linear. Plateaus happen, injuries occur, and as we age, our bodies inevitably change. When the numbers stop moving in the right direction, those who rely solely on extrinsic validation often lose their motivation and quit.

To build a fitness habit that lasts a lifetime, you need to anchor your training to something much deeper than a physical result.

The Shift from Extrinsic to Intrinsic Motivation

When we exercise for aesthetics or a specific performance metric, we are relying on extrinsic motivation. It is highly effective in the short term (like getting in shape for a wedding or a summer holiday), but when the event passes, the motivation fades.

Shifting to intrinsic motivation means finding value in the process itself. Halle, Gym Floor Instructor at Aquadome, emphasises that while achieving a personal best is rewarding, those goals can lose meaning once achieved.

"When people connect exercise to something meaningful, they are much more likely to stay consistent because they are driven by purpose rather than results," Halle explains. "Exercising to help with mental health, setting a positive example for those around you, preparing for life's physical demands, or even raising money for charity helps create a stronger emotional connection to training."

When you look beyond the numbers, you discover the true anchors of lifelong fitness:

The Headspace: A hard session clears the noise from a bad day. As Halle points out, changing your focus from appearance or performance to overall well-being makes exercise feel less like a chore and more like self-care: "Many people find they are more motivated knowing that exercise can reduce stress, improve mood, increase confidence, and support better sleep!

The Long Game: Strength built now is independence at 70, giving you the functional capacity to meet life's physical demands and stay healthy for your family or recover from illness.

The Routine: Showing up is the anchor the rest of the week hangs off.

None of that shows up on a barbell. All of it keeps people coming back.

Training for Someone Else Works Even Harder

Another powerful way to reframe your training is through prosocial motivation (exercising for the benefit of others). Committing to a charity run or a fundraiser completely changes the stakes.

When your training benefits others, missing a session stops being a personal choice. When the 5:00 AM alarm rings, hitting snooze means letting down a cause that relies on you. Halle observes that "training for a charity event can encourage people to push through difficult sessions because they know they are helping others while improving their own health." This emotional connection creates external accountability, unlocking a level of grit that aesthetic goals simply cannot match.”

Purpose Drives Long-Term Consistency

Having a clear purpose is what turns temporary enthusiasm into a lifelong habit. "Motivation naturally changes day to day, but having a clear purpose helps people continue training even when they don't feel like it," Halle notes. "Whether it's improving mental health, being healthier for family, recovering from illness, or supporting a charity, purpose creates long-term habits that lead to lasting health and fitness improvements."
