TEAM MEMBER SPOTLIGHT: MICHAEL’S ROAD TO WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS

TEAM MEMBER SPOTLIGHT: MICHAEL’S ROAD TO WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS cover

This is Michael’s journey towards achieving his dream of swimming for Australia.

Michael’s journey began in 2016 as part of therapy with Novita. In 2017, he joined the Wapid Swim disability program. With the support of dedicated coaches, what started as a form of therapy soon sparked a love for the water. Recognising his growing skill and enthusiasm, his team reached out to Carole, Head Coach at Playford Aquatic Club, to explore the next step in his development.

By 2021, Michael had officially joined Playford Aquatic Club. Under Carole’s mentorship, his swimming went from strength to strength – enjoyment evolved into passion, and passion into purpose.

That same year, Michael was formally classified as an athlete with a disability. Rather than a limitation, this opened new doors. It brought clarity to his path and helped shape his goal into something real and within reach.

Later in 2021, Michael qualified for his first State Championships. In 2022, he made his debut at the National Championships as an S19 classified athlete. Since then, he has qualified each year for both State and National events, competing in Age and Open categories.

But Michael’s commitment to the water doesn’t end with competition. Since 2020, he’s been part of the Elizabeth Life Saving Club. In 2022, he began a school based traineeship with BlueFit. Today, he’s a qualified swimming instructor and lifeguard, inspiring others through both his example and his work.

We’re excited to share that Michael’s dream has become a reality: he has been selected to represent Australia at the 2025 Virtus World Swimming Championships in Bangkok, Thailand, from 20–30 August.

So, next time you’re at the pool and see Michael, say hello. His story is a reminder that with determination, passion, and the backing of a supportive community, big dreams can come true – no matter how they begin.
